Dr. Liu is Associate Professor in the Hydrometallurgy group in the Department of Materials Engineering, where she also holds a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Battery Materials Extraction.
Her research interests are in developing aqueous processes for critical metals extraction from ore and mine waste. She has worked with multiple industry partners to develop technologies for extraction of base metals, precious metals, and rare earth elements, and is an active contributor in interdisciplinary collaborations across UBC
Her current research focuses on heap leaching and bioleaching, as well as Iodine-assisted copper extraction from chalcopyrite ore in heap leaching and concentrate in stirred tank leaching. More recent research investigates the use of machine learning for management of contaminant release from mine waste.
