In a collaborative research project BRIMM’s Sustainable Energy Systems is working with University of Queensland’s Sustainable Mine Institute and MMG Ltd. on the design of a renewable-hybrid energy system for the proposed Izok Mine located in Nunavut, Canada. This remote arctic mine project seeks progressive and novel energy technologies for the provision of low carbon energy to its various mine-to-mill processes. Our solution comprises a hybrid energy system of wind-electrochemical power system, electrified fleet and thermal storage solutions. The preliminary results have shown considerable potentials for carbon and cost reduction opportunities.
